Quilt #2

25 05 2009

The 2nd quilt I’ve ever made is finally finished!  When I think about it, I feel like I’ve made ~100 quilts because I look at pictures of other peoples quilts so often.  But then I remember that I’ve only made 2.  This quilt, as you may remember, was inspired by the picture Amanda painted me for our birthday.  I only bought the batting and like 1/2 yd of fabric and the rest is from the huge stash of fabric I’ve acquired.  I used Warm & Natural cotton batting.  The quilting is just free motion squiggles with a few hearts thrown in when I got bored.  The binding is just pieced from random fabrics.

Quilting a Full Size quilt is a BIG task.  I had such a hard time getting my sewing machine to work right- it finally straightened up but I’ve concluded that no matter what I set the tension on, it’ll do whatever it pleases.  Whatev, machine, whatev.

I almost like the back more than the front!

The back is from the stash, as well.  Here is the detail:

Matt said it makes it look like a 3rd graders quilt…haha.  He really does like it and he doesn’t want it to go on the guest bed, he wants it on our bed!  It won’t fit but that is OK since we hardly ever make the bed.

“Why am I finding safety pins all over the house?!” -Matt.  It’s because I randomly find safety pins in the quilt and I just take them out and put them on whatever ledge is closest.

Will you pray for Matthew’s great-grandma Faye (Mema)?  She is in her nineties and had a heart attack today while eating out.   She had another while at the hospital.   She is the sweetest little lady and has the BEST stories.

K, gotta go to bed.  Peace, love, gymnastics.

Fixed!

23 05 2009

Whatever was going on with my machine while quilting is now fixed!  I did a lot of different things- 1) Changed the needle plate in case it has spurs thinning out the thread 2) changed to Gutterman thread 3) oiled the whole machine 4) changed the tension to right under 5 instead of right over 5) cleaned out the bobbin case (there was nothing in there) 6) kissed it.  One of those 6 things made my machine able to quilt without breaking thread!

Last night, we went bowling with some friends.  It was sooooo much fun.  My grandma used to bowl on a league and it brought back memories from going to play with her.  I obviously didn’t pick up on her techniques since I scored 106 and 48.  106 is pretty good but I think it was just luck?  Matt is a really good bowler- it was out first time bowling together- he’s cute.  And we witnessed our friend Wes score his first game over 200.  I would consider him a bowling pro.

How funny would it be to have glow-in-the-dark thread?  I want to make a pillow with it.

New dress

22 05 2009

This is my new blog.  I departed from having a blog with my twin sis because it was confusing and I like WordPress.  Matt has a WordPress blog and he converted me over!  He is also my technical genius and helps me figure out computer issues.  Amanda might be guest blogging every now and then, like when she starts using all the sewing skills I taught her.  “Pi” might be a temporary name for the blog.  My initials are TT, written together = the pi sign.

pi = 3.14159265. and that is all I know about pi.

Hanging out in the kitchen with the new dress

Our fridge is boring as is the rest of our apartment.  We started packing our belongings WAY too early and now we have no exciting decorations and lots of things are already in boxes.

The back of the dress is a little funky with the darts, I'm working on fixing it

I used the same pattern for this dress as the shirts.  It is really easy and comfortable.  Putting the zipper in totally slipped my mind- oops.  The darts in the back are really weird.  (Amanda, Jaime, Mom: I put a dart in it (two, actually) and I don’t like them.)  Should I take the darts out or make them a little shorter?  I don’t know if they are necessary but I hate ripping stitches (and I misplaced my seam ripper!)

New T's from Hobby Lobby

New T's from Hobby Lobby

The past year I was able to help out with the middle schoolers at church on Wednesday nights.  Middle school is such an awkward age!!!!  It was fun, but since we are moving to Louisville, I can no longer help.  This Wednesday we had ice cream and the kids wrote their goodbye’s on the white board.  One boy said I was a “beastly person” and I’m told that is a compliment!?  Matt and I have learned many new words and phrases from the youth, the are crazy!  They also gave me a sweet Hobby Lobby gift card =)  And that is how I have new fabric and new T’s…and there is still more to come!   The small T was just a cardboard letter but I added a little batting and covered it with fabric.  Isn’t that fabric CUTE?!  It is from my cousin’s grandma’s stash of fabric she gave to me.  There are 2 boxes full of fabric, condensed from 7 boxes.

That’s all for now.  We have a big fun weekend ahead of us!  Dinner and bowling tomorrow night, wedding Saturday, last Sunday at church in Owensboro, and a goodbye lunch with our Sunday School class.  Bittersweet!!

(Not sure why wordpress thinks I’m blogging at 3:51am…)

Help!!!

21 05 2009

Does anyone know why my machine might be doing this? I’m free motion quilting and using Coats and Clark white thread. The top thread breaks after a few stipples. It’s like it thins out and eventually breaks. I’ve changed my needle, adjusted the tension up and down (when I adjusted down a #, the bottom threads were super loose), changed to a different type thread, oiled the gears….what is going on? Any other suggestions? I know in free motion quilting the tension should be lowered some- how low do you usually go?

Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

This describes my day: watched the birds and played with my cutie cousins.

Another shirt.

How ’bout that french braid?!?!!!!!! I’m so happy my hair is long enough to braid.

And there is our camera- now you know why my pictures are always really dark or blurry…our camera is a little old and the operator isn’t all that technologically savvy.

Simplicity 3835 again. I used the 3/4 sleeve and tie thingie instead of elastic short sleeves. I wish you could feel how soft this fabric is. It’s not knit, it’s woven, but it is as soft as knit. It kinda looks like denim but I promise it doesn’t feel that way!

It’s obvious that I’m out of my internship. I sew more, therefore I blog more.

Thanks for the recipes, friends =) I love simple recipes.

Simplicity 3835

7 05 2009

This pattern is so simple! I finally found it at Wal-Mart for $7. This fabric is from the stash my cousin’s grandma gave me. It’s sort of seersucker with blue and pink plaid. I’m going to make another one today with some AMH fabric- it will be gorgeous, I’m sure!

If you go to pick out a pattern at the store, remember to check what size you’re getting. I got home and saw that I had picked up the 12-14-16-18 size and thought I picked up the wrong one. But I didn’t, I wear a 12 in sewing pattern size— Check your measurements!

This quilt front…and back…I need to buy some batting and then it’ll turn into a quilt sandwich to be quilted…. yay

Cooking

5 05 2009

Hey friends. I need some new recipes. I know there are TONS of cooking websites online so I’ll look there but what is your favorite meal? Here are just about all the things I cook:

-Chicken Pot Pie
-Spaghetti
-Brown Rice w/ pork
-Tacos
-Lasagna
-Kielbasa pasta
-Tuna Patti’s (haha sis)
-White Chili
-Red Chili
-Skillet Chicken
-Taco Soup
-Donna’s Chicken (also known as cream of chicken w/ chicken pieces and ritz crackers/poppyseeds)
-Breakfast pizza
-Veggie Bake w/ chicken

Amanda, if you make something often and it’s not on this list, tell me what it is.

As you can probably tell, I like to cook things that are really easy and fast and with easy ingredients. We are super burnt out on all of these meals so I need help!

I need to go to the grocery!

revival

4 05 2009

This is the quilt….sort of. It’s not all sewn together and those are not all the rows. There are 2 more rows of 5 squares. It’s hard to match up seams so I’ve been lolly gagging on finishing it up.

Here is the shirt I made today. I’m undecided on if I like it or not. I didn’t use fun cute fabric because I wasn’t sure how it would fit and I hate wasting pretty fabric! I guess this is just a little obnoxious….green and orange, apples and flowers?! HAHA

This is a great picture taken by moi. haha just kidding. I had to take this sucker in like 3 inches on each side! It was REALLY baggy. Now it is just kinda baggy. I guess it’ll make a good maternity shirt in a few years. Or sooner.?

We’re moving to Louisville. I don’t have a job yet. Waiting to hear back from an interview.

Tell me what you HONESTLY think about this shirt>> http://sewmamasew.com/blog2/?p=791 I can’t figure out how to link so you’ll have to copy paste.
